Heart of Iowa (ASAC)  Cedar Rapids, Iowa

The Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC) Heart of Iowa building added a new elevator to their facility in order to provide wheelchair access to the upper floors. The building, which is a counseling and child care facility with three different levels, has undergone numerous additions and renovations. ASAC felt that adding an elevator would greatly improve their ability to provide services to their clients.

For this project, Brost Architects and Planners worked with DCL Consultants, West Plains Engineering and Schulte Development to provide a new electric elevator. The elevator required two sided access in order to serve the three floors of the facility that were arranged in a split level configuration, as well a compact size to preserve existing wall murals.

A portion of the existing building also had a low slope roof, which had drainage issues. We were able to retain the existing building and add a sloped roof on top of it. This not only improved drainage, but it is also blended the various additions into a more cohesive and harmonious building.
